Some good news? Sort of -- you can't eat any of them, and they all increase the trade deficit. Buy anything other than seeds and gardening supplies at your peril.

One might consider it a new low in capitalism, but I'd argue, it's always been there. Like poetry, money doesn't flow when everything is okay.

Meet the new Bogeymen - Monsanto. I know, it's sorta sci-fi, the idea of jackbooted thugs that threaten citizens with lawsuits like we're living in the movie Brazil (Tuttle?), but this sort of this is happeneing all the time. I think they pick on midwesterners because they can't get away with doing that shit west of the Rockies. It's time for midwesterners to stand up and kick this company right the hell outa town.

To sum up for the rest of us, the old skool gang was runnin' a nice business, extracting protection money and reselling stolen booze -- the usual gangsta stuff. Then the marks wised up and started hiring their own goons. In an effort to retain a little control of the situation, the ol' boys said, "you want in, fine, bring your own toys to the party, we're pullin' out." What, I wonder, happens to the price of gold when that much is floated on the commodity market? Do they really think this will decrease the volatility in the market that has ensued after $1k gold in March? I'll predict here that it will actually incrase volatility and that some fat cats are poised to reinvest that into more "domestic" markets in anticipation of a presumed period of fiscal and political isolationism after November. Then again, I got my degrees in repairing guitar amps and fruit trees; what the hell do I know?

You're not dumb -- you're just not used to rewriting the rules that govern money. Like a bad vampire novel, there have to be rules, even if the premise is totally made up.

A move that would make 'ol J.P. proud. This is a guy who made millions selling rusty six-shooters to the Union Army, after all. The Robber-Barrons never went away. They're like herpes, they just go into remission.

To Feed and Beautify I was actually contacted by a reporter from one of my favourite NPR shows today. They're doing a feature on how the upward price of food has encouraged people in North America to begin gardening. I posted my lenghty response over on my blog, under the title, Marketplace and Marie Meet on Urban Gardening.

Woof - an ugly site but what he has to say is golden. I've not read anything on here this is bullshit, though some is a bit wordy. No matter - Mr. Heller was right before and is probably right today, too.
