The moral of the story is that sometimes you find good stuff in Nigeria. I love the look of this one -- very, very London when the idea of it being one of the most cosmo cities on Earth was plausible. And isn't Dodo just adorable? Actually, all the companions are -- very sweet and young, which is a nice juxtoposition to the evil of those darn War Machines. I should ask Matt if he wants to rename our router bubble WOTAN -- what a couple of dorks!

I actually rather like them, but can't help but be impressed at the incredible job that was done (and not by BBC) on the Ambassadors of Death, one of my favourite epidodes ever, partially for the incredibly creepy music and the totally awesome guy who played British Space Control (yes, you may begin laughing now). Well, regardless, technology is catching up and I love it. Now, if only they could really put those Second Doctor stories back together, I might be able to remain awake through Robert Holmes' "The Space Pirates." The Abominable Snowman is pretty dull w/ telesnaps, too, but at least the audio is better than that for the Highlanders. I might add that the Yeti stories are very reminiscent in tone of those produced for Tom Baker, who claimed to draw character inspiration from the truly remarkable and sadly deceased Patrick Troughton.

It's not just all scarves and teeth or that heart-throb, David Ten-inch (he is Scots, after all). You must check out the first two doctors now that their stories are being reconsructed by fans all over the world, working together, just like the Doctor would want. That the original Star Trek stole liberally from the first and second doctors is telling. This incredibly well-documented site gives you the skinny on ever episode ever of this series that has run, on and off, for over 40 years. Check it out -- you'll find that some of the early stories are the best. Yes, everyone makes fun of their tiny little budget and horrible special effects, but consider that they made a new world on a shoe string budget just about every week for years -- a long time before you could just do it on a oomputer, too. My favorite early episodes include: "An Unearthly Child," "The Planet of Giants," "Dalek Invasion of Earth," "The Romans" (see Barbara get chased around by Nero as an Exotic Woman of Brittania), "The Rescue," "The Keys of Marinus," "The Sensorites," "Celestial Toymaker," "The Web Planet," "The War Machines," "The Moonbase," "The Evil of the Daleks," "Tomb of the Cybermen," "The Ice Warriors," "Enemy of the World," "The Wheel in Space," "The Dominators" (worst costuming of any show, ever), "The Mind Robber" (most psychedellic episode ever - a must see!), "The War Games," "Speahead From Space," "Ambassadors of Death," "Inferno," "Mind of Evil," "Colony in Space," "The Daemons," "The Claws of Axos," "The Mutants," "The Time Monster," "The Three Doctors," "Carnival of Monsters" (my earliest Dr. Who memory), "The Green Death," and "Planet of the Spiders." Keep playin' Doctor...Earth needs you more than ever.

You'll notice no one has a Davros cake, despite the fact that his face looks a bit like a cake. My vote goes for a strawberry flavoured Peking Homunculus (from The Talons of Weng-Chiang) or perhaps a Macra. Nah, the macra would make better cupcakes. :)

A must watch for anyone who ever tried to copy TV or movies on their own as a kid. I know I watched a lot of Dr. Who as a kid -- 3rd and 4th, I think. My dad thinks of it as "that show with torches down in a mine." I am totally appreciating our film-maker's nods to the early doctors. That they are entirely new stories told by kid actors makes it even more impressive if you've seen the show in its low-budget era. I mean, these kids are able to do something in their bedroom and spare time that is almost comprable to the BBC serials from the 70s in technique. Of course, that era is about the acting and the snappy ad-libbing. Kudos to the Mysterious Internaut and company.
