Ah, if only our agricultural sector was as advnaced as Cuba's. We need smart people to consider farming a worthy occupation, because it is.

The first of many such stories? And yes, that's a very good quesiton -- where will the refugees of Oceania go? All the nice places are full. Will this trail of tears be conducted by boat? At what point do we abandon Florida? I'd vote for now, but the news stories are so amusing from a distance.

Somehow, I think the people are goign to win this one. And honestly, if the true cost of air travel was actualy included in the ticket price, there would be no need for an additional anything at Heathrow.

That's our guy in Italy. There is no doubt in my mind that the US tampered with recent Italian elections. How else to keep the "coalition of the coerced" together? How sad for the people of Italy. The slow food movement began here -- now it's being apallingly polluted by the freakin' mafia -- for shame!

Hmm...at least bullemics get something out of their waste. I go through this battle every day here at the house w/ Matt. And yes, he will go out of his way to sneak food into the trash, and yes, I dig it out of the trash and turn it into animal treats or compost if it's the junk food that he likes and I won't feed to my animals. I think it makes him feel more American -- more like a man -- to buy stuff and waste food, but I'm sure he'd chafe at that notion...quite sure. And yes Matt, I know you make up errands so you can get meat sandwiches downtown instead of eating my cooking. That's fine. What I hate is the lying. And it's the flesh of a dead animal, not booze...you freakin' addict.

Oregon cleans up its beaches every year w/ the SOLV crusade. Is it possible to pick this shit up? No really, I'm serious. SOLV is something of a distributed network that has been successfully used to clean up estuaries all over the US - what if we paid people to pick up plastic rather than fish or whales? I vote that we store it in the desert Southwest when it becomes too dry to support human life there, but that's just me. Seriously, even if we could pick it all up, where do we put it? I get the feeling it's beyond recycling at this point.

Great page on solar cookers, dryers, heaters, etc.... It's easier than you might think. You can even distill water, though they still don't quite get hot enough to do booze. Damn!

Hmmm...it's about time. Seattle and Portland both have good water supplies, as far as it goes. Better, I think, than what goes into most of those bottles of water. I cringe whenever someone offers me one, in no small part because they almost always taste like bottle. Distilled water, that's different and useful if you're a radiator, but this shit is an environmental disaster. Put down your bottles, get a bucket and collect your own while it's still raining.

I suppose now that energy-intensive concrete will be more expensive, there'll be fewer dams built.
